Sputnik 2 lifts off carrying a passenger. No heat shield. No way down.

Altitude

One orbit, every 103 minutes

A small dog from a Moscow street is now the fastest living thing that has ever existed.

Above everything

The first of us to leave

Before Gagarin. Before Armstrong. Before any of it. There was Laika.

01 / A stray from Moscow

Nobody knew her name. A stray off the Moscow streets, three years old and five kilograms of nothing. They sent her first.

The engineers chose strays on purpose. They believed a dog that had already survived a Moscow winter with no food and no shelter could survive anything. They called her Kudryavka, Little Curly, then Zhuchka, then Limonchik. The world settled on Laika, which simply means barker.

She was trained in cages that got smaller every week, fed a gel that would keep in zero gravity, and taught to sit still while the world shook around her.

above the entire world.

02 / She never came home

Five to seven hours.

The cabin overheated on the fourth orbit. For forty five years the official story said otherwise. The truth came in 2002.

A felt headstone reading Laika

Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. The more time passes, the more I am sorry about it. We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.

Her name goes back up.

She went first and she went alone. Sixty nine years later we are putting her back in orbit. This time she stays up.

03 / How to buy

Three steps to orbit.
